The European Union was a supranational and intergovernmental union of states on the continent of Europe during Earth's late pre-unification era. Founded from a prior organization in 1993, the European Union was originally organized as an international organization, but, over the course of its evolution, began to adopt many of the characteristics and authorities of a state in its own right, especially in the area of economics. It even introduced a common currency, called the euro, that many of its member states adopted as their own. (Historical accounts)

The European Union was one of the powers that pooled its resources with other states to help divert the orbits of a number of asteroids that threatened the planet in 2031. A major world power, the European Union and United States became major rivals with the Eastern Coalition through the mid-2000s. By 2053, this led to the outbreak of World War III; the European Union was hit hard, with cities such as London suffering from the detonation of nuclear weapons over their airspace. (The Sundered)
The European Union was a precursor to the 22nd century European Hegemony, which itself was a precursor to the establishment of United Earth in 2130.
