Flag of the European Union

Flag of the European Union

The European Union was a supranational and intergovernmental union of states on the continent of Europe during Earth's late pre-unification era. It included states such as France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom and Italy.

The European Union was founded in 1993 on the basis of the European Community, an economic alliance dating back to the 1950s. The Community was designed to tie European nations together to prevent a repeat of the Second World War and its associated human rights atrocities. Over the course of its history the European Union evolved from a simple international organization to something that began to resemble a state in its own right, especially in economic matters. It created a single economy, with even a common currency for most of its members, and helped stabilise and democratise Eastern Europe after the Earth Cold War. (Historical accounts)

The European Union was one of the powers that pooled its resources with other states to help divert the orbits of a number of asteroids that threatened the planet in 2031. A major world power, the European Union and United States became major rivals with the Eastern Coalition through the mid-2000s. By 2053, this led to the outbreak of World War III; the European Union was hit hard, with cities such as London suffering from the detonation of nuclear weapons over their airspace. (TLE novel: The Sundered)

Vanguard asteroid colony director Zafirah al-Arif once attended a garish electrical parade as a child in the European Union. (TLE novel: The Sundered)

The European Union was a precursor to the European Hegemony (TNG episode: "Up the Long Ladder") and European Alliance (TNG episode: "The Price"), which themselves were precursors to the establishment of United Earth in 2130.

It is also possible that the European Hegemony or European Alliance is merely an informal term applied to the other and/or the European Union rather than being a distinct successor/parallel entity.
The Alliance was probably bordered by the Mediterranean Alliance. (TOS novelization: Star Trek: The Motion Picture)
