The Exiles was the name given to an alien race that invaded planet Drema IV in 2367, overthrew the government, and forced the native population into forced labor, mining the planet's rich dilithium resources. The Exiles' occupation lasted ten months, and ended when a Dreman uprising overwhelmed the relatively small alien forces. During their withdrawal, however, the Exiles planted a number of explosive devices, called xurta, in order to prevent further dilithium mining by any other interests. (SCE eBook: Progress)
