The Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire is in the individual in the Federation government in charge of the UFP's diplomatic mission to the Klingon Empire. The ambassador lives in an official residence owned and maintained by the Federation, and his/her primary place of work is the Federation Embassy on Qo'noS.

The ambassador's primary duty is to maintain good diplomatic relations with the Klingon Empire and to maintain the sometimes unstable Klingon-Federation alliance. The ambassador must present Federation policies to the Klingon government and people, and report Klingon policies and views to the Federation government. The ambassador serves as a primary channel of communication between the two states, and plays an important role in treaty negotiations. The ambassador is the head of the Federation's consular service in the Empire, directs diplomatic activity in support of trade, is ultimately responsible for visa services and for the provision of consular support to Federation citizens in the Klingon Empire, and oversees cultural relations between the two states.

The Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire is appointed by the President of the United Federation of Planets and confirmed by the Federation Council; customarilly, the ambassador, like the rest of the Federation's diplomats, resigns his/her position upon the ascension of a new president to give the new president the option of reappointing them or appointing a new ambassador.

Notable Federation Ambassadors to the Klingon Empire have included Emanuel Tagore in the early/mid-23rd century, Curzon Dax, K'Ehleyr in the 2360s, and Worf, Son of Mogh from 2375 to 2379. Alexander Rozhenko is the current Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire, having taken over from his father. (DS9 episode: "What You Leave Behind", TNG novel: A Time for War, A Time for Peace)

Alternate timeline[]

In an alternate timeline, B'Elanna Torres was serving as the Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire as of 2404. Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway used her friendship with B'Elanna to secure a meeting with Korath, the Klingon Empire's premier temporal physicist. (VOY episode & novelization: Endgame)
