The Federation Department of Science is an executive agency of the government of the United Federation of Planets charged with promoting scientific research and development in the UFP.

In 2284, Dr. Carol Marcus applied for a research grant from the Federation Department of Science, eventually securing the funding and resources necessary to continue research into the Genesis device. (TNG novel: The Genesis Wave, Book I).

The Artificial Intelligence Division was charged with developing and maintaining all forms of AI's in the Federation. From programming food slots and recreational computers to main computer cores aboard starships and starbases. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky).
