This Federation light cruiser type was a variant of the Intrepid-class design which entered service in the Federation Starfleet in the 24th century.

The main production base for these vessels was the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in the Sol system, and several were in operation by the mid-2370s. (DS9 reference: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual)

One such ship, the USS Yeager, saw extensive action during the Dominion War, participating in the operation to regain control of Deep Space 9 from Dominion forces in 2374, and then serving as part of DS9's defense force for the remainder of the war. (DS9 episode: "Sacrifice of Angels")
