Fertilizers were a substance used in agriculture as an additive to provide crops with additional nutrients. Fertilizers could be organically produced by methods such as composting, or created artificially with chemical processing.

The Armada was a Federation certified organic agricultural colony so only used natural, and rather pungent, fertilizers. (TNG - The Space Between comic: "Space Seeds")
