Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! At present the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Discovery and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG, Star Trek: Infinite and Star Trek Online, as well as other post-57th Anniversary publications such as the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the {{spoiler}}, {{spoilers}} OR {{majorspoiler}} tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). The USS Excelsior (registry NCC-1718) was a Federation starship, a Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd century. (FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

Service history and disposition[]

Constitution-achernar

Proposed Bonhomme Richard-class configuration.

Construction of the Excelsior as a Bonhomme Richard-subclass vessel was authorized by the Starfleet appropriation of stardate 3220. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)

In 2267, the Excelsior was docked at Starbase 11 undergoing repairs. (TOS episode: "Court Martial")

In 2269, the Excelsior, under the command of Captain LaLiberté, along with the USS Republic, was dispatched to Altair VII in response to an unknown entity that had been attacking planetary targets. Captain Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise discovered that a vast machine planet intelligence from a parallel universe called Nagha was behind the attacks. (TOS - The New Voyages 2 short story: "The Sleeping God")

The Excelsior was refit to the Enterprise-subclass specifications, outfitted as an advanced heavy cruiser (CA+), by the 2280s decade. (ST video game: Starfleet Command)

No history or definitive final fate is established for this vessel in Starfleet Command as its name was randomly assigned to a cruiser vessel by the game software. Assuming Starfleet would not field two capital ships with the same name, Excelsior was probably taken out of service at some point before the ship commissioning and launch of the Excelsior-class USS Excelsior in 2285. In terms of the SFC game series, this predecessor vessel was removed from the game code for the sequels Starfleet Command II: Empires at War and Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates, where the new Excelsior was available for play.
