Leading a military career, Gardner became an Terran admiral in the Imperial Starfleet who was in command of the Terran Empire's fleet in 2155. He was stationed on Earth. He angrily rebuffed Commander Jonathan Archer's demand for Starfleet to surrender, threatening to fire on the Defiant if he continued to approach Earth.
