Joseph Shabalala was a male human in Starfleet in the 24th century.

Biography[]

One of his first assignments upon being commissioned as an ensign was the USS Bonaventure, where he met then-Lieutenant Simon. The two served on one other ship together before Shabalala, having reached the rank of Commander, was selected by Captain Simon as her executive officer aboard the USS Fearless.

In 2370, during a mission to the planet Patnira, Simon (and a number of other crew) were mutated by a Patniran weapon, leading to the loss of the Fearless, and forcing Shabalala to kill Simon.

Following this incident, Shabalala was assigned as first officer of the USS Odyssey under Captain Declan Keogh. Three months into this assignment, the Odyssey was destroyed in the Federation's first engagement with the Jem'Hadar. (DS9 - The Brave and the Bold, Book One novella: The Second Artifact; DS9 episode: "The Jem'Hadar")

Shabalala was married to Aleta Shabalala. They had a son, Anthony Shabalala, and a daughter who was born in 2359. (DS9 - The Brave and the Bold, Book One novella: The Second Artifact)

Although it has never been stated in any story, author Keith R.A. DeCandido has confirmed in an online forum that Anthony Shabalala of the SCE series is the son of Joseph Shabalala. The Star Trek card game calls the character Jace Michaels.
