Like all Luna-class starships, the Io was named after a moon in the Sol star system. (TNG novel: Greater Than the Sum)

Active service[]
The first batch of Luna-class starships entered service in the year 2379. (TTN novel: Taking Wing Luna Class Concept Notes)
Early the following year of the First Splinter[6] timeline, the Io made first contact with the Trinni/ek. They later were responsible for discovering the unusual radioactive properties of their sun, after both the Io crew and the Trinni/ek delegation to Earth fell ill due to their effects.

In May 2381, the Io was involved in the survey of an asteroid field. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny)
