Flaherty was a junior officer in Starfleet in 2287. Pavel Chekov was his immediate supervisor. He did some drinking with Pavel Chekov and Hicks on the USS Enterprise -A. When Montgomery Scott noticed the vodka on Hicks's breath, Flaherty's name was mentioned. (TOS novel: The Rift)
