A flame-thrower was a weapon developed on Earth in the early 20th century, which shot flames using a directed stream of inflammable liquid or gas.

The 21st century version of the flame-thrower was napalm-fueled and laser powered, and had a range of over 100 yards. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)
