Fort Knox was a United States Army post in Kentucky. The United States Bullion Depository was a fortified vault building located near Fort Knox, which was used to store a large portion of United States official gold reserves, as well as other precious items belonging to the United States of America.

Following the Third World War, the gold reserves of Fort Knox had been depleted to the point of nonexistence. (ST novelization: Star Trek: First Contact)

After money became obsolete, the military installation was turned into a museum. Tom Paris stated that no one had broken into the place at all, until it was turned into a museum, and that two Ferengi tried it, but failed. (VOY episode: "Dark Frontier")
