Ten Forward2380/Yearbox Proposals (Reply | Watch)

referencing project:sandbox/Yearbox Proposals... We've got A.) Wikipedia, B.) Star Wars, and C.) Memory Alpha. Memory Alpha seems to use a template I can't locate, but I think wikipedia's looks interesting. I say we use the top-right kind of year formatting, but want any opinion before implementing (with 1-3 users, I hope this voting goes quickly) - Lieutenant Ayala 11:31, 10 Oct 2005 (UTC)

I've added a new one that combines features from a couple of versions. Let's call it D.--Chops 01:59, 11 Oct 2005 (UTC)

Well, like I said, I like the Wikipedia one. As for D, it only shows the decade of the year; I think the template should reflect both recent years and future years. Although I don't think we need to link to quite so many decades and centuries as the wiki one. I'd also like to see the "assumed" stardates included. - Lieutenant Ayala 22:58, 16 Oct 2005 (UTC)
You're quite rightabout the lack of an equivalent stardate. I'm not sure where to put it. It could be after "2380s" or above or below. I'm not sure what you mean by "both recent years and future years." The only reason D doesn't show previous years is that 2380 is the first year in a decade. I could modify it to include 2379 and 2390. I'e added another one that reflects these changes.
The upside to D is that it's a template, so any changes to it would take affect universally. All you need to enter is this: {{User:Chops/Date Template|prev=237|dec=238|next=239|cent=24th}} The first three variables are the previous, current, and next decades, without the last zero. The last variable is the century. --Chops 06:48, 17 Oct 2005 (UTC)

All of them look pretty good. The only problem I may have is that I don't really know how to calculate stardates. -arc

The 24th century stardates are 1000 units per year. Theories abound to account for TOS stardates. --Chops 23:13, 17 Oct 2005 (UTC)
  • By "recent and future years", I mean how the wiki template lists "78, 79, 80, 81, 82". In case people want to go "two years before" or "two years after" not nessessarily in the same decade. And i'm sure the other version, with alterations, could be made into a template. Wiki uses it as a template I think? - Lieutenant Ayala 02:04, 18 Oct 2005 (UTC)
All right, I had't really checked for that. I still like how few variables there are in mine, but I'm willing to go with you on this one.

New Wikipedia yearbox Edit

Wikipedia has a new yearbox, so I thought I'd open this discussion again. I'm going to re-number them for clarity:

  1. Top right. The old Wikipedia yearbox
  2. First on the left. From the Star Wars wikicity
  3. 2nd on the right. New Wikipedia yearbox. I've added a part that lists the stardate range for that year. I wasn't quite able to duplicate the border, but it's close enough.
  4. 2nd on the left. Memory Alpha
  5. Bottom center. My own version. Requires only five inputs.

Thoughts? I'd like to finally implement this. --Chops 23:35, 11 Nov 2005 (UTC)

ResistanceEdit

OK, I was going to place Resistance in between AOTF (chapters 1-6) and "The Calling", but when I try to edit, I only get what seem to be a template. Huh? – Turtletrekker 05:19, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Yup, with he exception of the 2370s all the chronology boxes are on templates so they can appear simultaneously on each year page and the chronology pages. You just have to edit the template :) --8of5 05:31, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. I will remember that in the future. – Turtletrekker 06:19, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

NowEdit

What year is it? Nemesis was set in 2379. Nemesis the book came out in 2002 (real-time). Everything that's come out since then keeps setting the timeframe at 2380 or before. Is it 2385 yet? – AT2Howell 19:00, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

If you look at the rough equation for relating Star Trek years to our years then we are somewhere in 2384. This is based on how the television seasons match up to the trek timeline, based on one year per season as seen below.
  • 1987-1988 = 2364
  • 1988-1989 = 2365
  • 1989-1990 = 2366
  • 1990-1991 = 2367
  • 1991-1992 = 2368
  • 1992-1993 = 2369
  • 1993-1994 = 2370
  • 1994-1995 = 2371
  • 1995-1996 = 2372
  • 1996-1997 = 2373
  • 1997-1998 = 2374
  • 1998-1999 = 2375
  • 1999-2000 = 2376
  • 2000-2001 = 2377
  • 2001-2002 = 2378
  • 2002-2003 = 2379
  • 2003-2004 = 2380
  • 2004-2005 = 2381
  • 2005-2006 = 2382
  • 2006-2007 = 2383
  • 2007-2008 = 2384
If Star Trek had continued in the 24th century after Voyager then we would currently be in the 2007-2008 season set in 2384. So the 2008-2009 season would be set in 2385. So a year to go yet. --The Doctor 21:37, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
There should be a page to explain this! This is great! Now, if we could only get the authors to look at it. Maybe then they'd realize they could move (gasp!) forward. – AT2Howell 22:45, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

New layout proposal for years Edit

I took this page as a starting point to clean up the individual year pages. This is Sisyphus, I know... :) but look at User:Tkhobbes/timeline for my proposition - I'd love to hear your opinion! -- Tkhobbes 21:14, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

To see a summary on how the new layout evolved and for any discussions about it, please refer to Forum:Year_pages -- Tkhobbes 15:19, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
