Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! At present the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Discovery and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG, Star Trek: Infinite and Star Trek Online, as well as other post-57th Anniversary publications such as the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the spoiler, spoilers OR majorspoiler tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). Also, please do not include details in the summary bar when editing pages and do not anticipate making additions relating to sources not yet in release. THANK YOU

Ten ForwardNamespace change (Reply | Watch)
MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT

I've been in contact with the admins at Wikia about changing the namespace to Memory Beta, but we've hit a little snag as outlined below:

Hello, I hope that you will be able to help. The members of the Non-Canon Star Trek Wiki have voted and agreed that we should rename the wiki to Memory Beta. While most pages represent the new name, we wondered if it would be possible to move the namespace to Memory Beta.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank You. --The Doctor 01:06, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
I can't do this since there are so many pages already in that namespace which would disappear if I just made that the project namespace. It needs the tech team to change the page titles directly in the database but it could take a while before they have a chance to do that. If you have enough willing admins, they could move the pages out of that namespace to the real project namespace and delete the redirects, then I could rename it. I accept full responsibility for the cock-up, but I am going to rectify this by doing as Angela suggests and moving all articles beginning with Memory Beta: to temporary articles and deleting the redirects so that the move can take place. The easiest way to do this is if someone can create a bot which would move the pages, deleted the redirect, and corrected the links on the pages. I am going to post some requests on Memory Alpha and the main wiki's for someone to create a bot, but if someone knows of a bot we could use or can create one, any help would be appreciated. --The Doctor 23:30, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

The best place to move them to is Project:Article name. That way they'll automatically move back to Memory Beta:Article name when the namespace is changed. Another option is to make the new namespace Memory-Beta instead of Memory_Beta and then you could move the pages there whenever you're ready and not have to worry about deleting the redirects. Angela talk 00:13, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
The second option would definitely be more easier than the first if that's possible. However, it would slightly change the name of the wiki. What do others think? --The Doctor 00:27, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
I know it'd be easier, and I really hate to make "extra work" for people, but I don't think we should go with the "dash" namespace, it just doesn't look right. --TimPendragon 02:20, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
I'd be happy to help. The way things look now, all we would have to do would be to move all Non-canon Star Trek Wiki:PAGENAME and Memory_Beta:PAGENAME pages to the format Project:PAGENAME. I assume it would be best to do this before a bureaucrat initiates the namespace-renaming? -- Captain M.K.B. 07:20, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
 • BTW, I don't have a bot, but it would be possible for a few users moving pages manually to do it without too much trouble.. -- Captain M.K.B. 07:22, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

No it won't be to much trouble I suppose, but I believe Angela meant that the pages should be moved to the Non-canon Star Trek Wiki: namespace, so that when the namespace is changed they will automatically revert to the Memory Beta: namespace. I think we pretty much agree that this would be the best option, rather than having the Memory-Beta: namespace. --The Doctor 07:40, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Above she said "project". Not sure. -- Captain M.K.B. 07:44, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
I think project is the name of each wikia, so currently "Non-canon Star Trek Wiki" is the name of our project, which we wish to change to "Memory Beta". -- 8of5 07:56, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

But the software is designed to recognize the word "project" as an automatic cognate to the official namespace name. -- Captain M.K.B. 01:19, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Wait a minute, did this ever happen? We certainly have started using the name Memory Beta everywhere but I am not sure what the "namespace change" refers to exactly. Here I have been moving Category:Non-canon Star Trek Wiki images pages to Memory Beta images to make everything uniform. But from the above, it looks as though I have been doing this backwards. What is the current situation with the namespace? Did somehow everything work except the image categories? --Jdvelasc 08:52, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, no one ever followed up on this. The software does not recognize "Memory Beta" as an official namespace. -- Captain MKB 09:02, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
A quick and easy way to see all the official namespaces is to go to Special:Allpages and click on the Namespaces dropdown. All the currently defined namespaces will be displayed... and as Mike notes, "Memory Beta" is not in the list. -- Renegade54 19:17, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Hmm, I guess it is not a great idea for me to be moving all of the images out of the Category:Non-canon Star Trek Wiki images pages? I thought it would be useful to have all of the images in Memory Beta headings but if the namespace change is still pending will this mess up all of these image categories?
The category names would be unaffected, moving all of them to the new standard is fine. all categories exist in the "Category" namespace and that won't be changing. -- Captain MKB 16:24, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Just as an FYI: you (the collective you) need to keep on the Wikia folks to get something like that changed. I speak from experience as an admin on MA; I've had to request things multiple times before they get done. It's not that they're ignoring you - the request is probably on someone's list somewhere (or it could have slipped through the cracks). The tech staff is small, and they have lots to do... and the squeaky wheel gets the grease. -- Renegade54 17:31, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
