Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A friendly reminder regarding spoilers! At present the expanded Trek universe is in a period of major upheaval with the continuations of Discovery and Prodigy, the advent of new eras in gaming with the Star Trek Adventures RPG, Star Trek: Infinite and Star Trek Online, as well as other post-57th Anniversary publications such as the ongoing IDW Star Trek comic and spin-off Star Trek: Defiant. Therefore, please be courteous to other users who may not be aware of current developments by using the {{spoiler}}, {{spoilers}} OR {{majorspoiler}} tags when adding new information from sources less than six months old (even if it is minor info). Also, please do not include details in the summary bar when editing pages and do not anticipate making additions relating to sources not yet in release. THANK YOU

Ten ForwardRenaming the "Real" people category (Reply | Watch)

This one is something that's been bothering me for 10 years... we have a category that is called category:"Real" people with quotations (a typographic "ugh", in my opinion), and an out-of-POV descriptor -- since we describe the "reality" of Star Trek as a "reality" it is contradictory to imply that "reality" we live in is "Real" and that Star Trek is implied to not be "real" (or an "unreality" rather than the prime "reality"/alternate "reality" we refer to them as.

As a minor quibble about aesthetic, and also a question of accuracy in the descriptor, there a lot of real people articles and therefore it would be difficult to re-name without a solid plan.

I'd like to suggest a solid plan.

Wikipedia describes articles about living people as "biographical", so I'd like to enact a plan to use this terminology.

We could either forego a "meta" notation, or make this a meta category category:Memory Beta biographical articles or category:Memory Beta biographies, or something like this

If we chose to not access a solid POV notation by omitting a meta category descriptor, we could just call these category:Biographies or category:Biography with the proviso that only people who "really" existed to us in the "real-world" (that were references in POV in Star Trek) would be listed.

I'm open to some other suggestions as long as they address the concerns presented here. - Captain MKB 17:05, February 20, 2016 (UTC)

Additionally, this would open us to marking these articles for liability purposes. A great many of the real people in Star Trek might still be alive and Wikipedia adds a disclaimer about what the articles are allowed to say about a living person. We certainly want to paint a picture of how Stephen Hawking or George W. Bush were mentioned or seen in Star Trek, but we also want to avoid coloring a picture of them using unsourced info or opinions (which is why Wikipedia has their people articles set up as such). -- Captain MKB 17:12, February 20, 2016 (UTC)
An exceptionally simple plan would be to merge this category with category:people. -- Captain MKB 15:26, February 27, 2016 (UTC)

Anyone have any input? I'm very close to making a move to enact this suggestion -- Captain MKB 14:54, April 16, 2016 (UTC)
