Ten Forward → Star Trek Online "Game Mechanics" (Reply | Watch) |
Not sure if this is a right place to put this. But I don't believe game mechanics like game items (deflectors, shield arrays etc.) changing the appearance of your ship should be considered "lore" they're more of a cosmetic thing for players to do and don't need to be enabled. Same with hull material. For example on the "Geneva class" page it says
"the design of the Geneva-class command ship allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases. These options were designated Type 1-5 and Veteran." and "Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion."
That just sounds silly, and I don't think its ever been brought up in the lore of the game or in dialogue, it is just a game mechanic for player customization.
Now part customization, like swapping out nacelles that is from the game lore because newer ships were made modular. Though it is rarely used outside of player ships, and I don't think there are any NPC Kitbashes.
Don't wish to bring up another wiki, but Wookieepedia doesn't bring up game mechanics. It doesn't mention Kyle Katarn carrying around 50 weapons at once because that is just silly.
Thoughts? --Tuskin38 (talk) 18:21, May 15, 2015 (UTC)
- I agree with what you're saying and have deliberately left mention of "livery", as well as other such stuff including quantum slipstream (since it's granted as an ability of the player rather than the ship, except in the specific cases of the Odyssey-class and the Vesta line where it's mentioned in the ship's lore), out of the ship articles I've written. Admiral Markonian is the main guy who's been adding it, and he and I argued about it a bit on Talk:Contortrix class.
- But, re: Wookieepedia, I have to point out that Star Wars is a little different. Lucasfilm's canon policy specifically states game mechanics to be non-canon (or did before the Legends rebranding at least), whereas everything in Star Trek that isn't a TV show or a movie is non-canon, so there's no distinction between a game mechanic and story text. --StarSword (talk) 19:37, May 15, 2015 (UTC)
