Franklin was a Human member of the Federation Starfleet's operations division assigned to the security contingent aboard USS Enterprise in the 2260s.
When the Enterprise dispatched landing parties to besieged Holox in 2269, Franklin was part of a security detail under the command of Lieutenant Berengaria. Franklin, along with Scotty, Ching and Hrolfson, used a hovercraft to scout around a Sacker heat-dome on the planet. The Sackers attacked with directed energy weapons that burnt victims alive, killing Ching and Hrolfson, and severely burning Franklin. Franklin was beamed aboard Enterprise in a state of near death, with much of his skin incinerated. Doctor Leonard McCoy prescribed a proqualine burn bath and gave Franklin's recovery as a fifty-fifty chance. (TOS novel: The Three-Minute Universe)
