Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin von Steuben (September 17, 1730November 28, 1794) was a Human German who served as George Washington's chief of staff in the American Revolutionary War. He is credited for writing the field manuals for George Washington which helped lead the American forces to victory.

In 2290, the USS Excelsior had a shuttlecraft named for von Steuben. (ST novel: Excelsior: Forged in Fire)

Three Earth ocean vessels and one submarine were also named for von Steuben.
