Frinx was a male Ferengi who manufactured that society's first fully automatic waste extractor, and became a very profitable businessman.

At the height of his career, Frinx was replaced by an alien intelligence intending to invade Ferenginar. This agent was discovered by a Ferengi Commerce Authority agent named Stoonk, whose suspicions were raised when "Frinx" abandoned his pursuit of profit. The story of Frinx is used as an illustration of Ferengi Rule of Acquisition # 18: "A Ferengi without profit is no Ferengi at all."

Frinx's name became so connected with waste extraction that it became part of the expression, "to take a frinx." (DS9 reference: Legends of the Ferengi) It eventually became a more widely used profanity, in phrases such as "...shelling the frinx out of..." and "...running like frinx." (DS9 - The Left Hand of Destiny novels: Book One, Book Two)
