Gaia IV, also known as Gaia,[1] was an uninhabited planet, a class M world and the fourth planet in the Gaia binary[2] star system, located in the Gaia sector[3] of the galaxy's Gamma Quadrant. The planet was surrounded by an unusual energy barrier which fed a temporal anomaly. (DS9 episode: "Children of Time", STO - Gamma Quadrant mission: "Armistice")
History and specifics[]
While the planet was normally uninhabited, as contact with its energy barrier in the 2370s decade retroactively created an alternate timeline where Gaia was home to the multi-species Gaia colony and the Sons of Mogh people. One of Gaians was Parell, a Human who followed Klingon traditions set down by Worf and preserved by the Sons of Mogh.
In 2373, the crew of the Federation starship USS Defiant visited the planet and discovered that it was home to eight thousand inhabitants. The inhabitants were in actuality the descendants of the Defiant crew, in a timeline in which the starship was sent back in time to the 22nd century when it encountered the temporal anomaly upon attempting to leave the energy barrier. The inhabitants were erased from existence when the Odo who lived on the planet changed the course of the Defiant to avoid the temporal anomaly. The crew of the Defiant retained their memory of the inhabitants of Gaia IV. (DS9 episode: "Children of Time")
Starfleet later ordered a quarantine of the planet due to the energy barrier and the temporal anomaly. (ST reference: Star Charts)
Gariff Lucsly of the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations thought the causal loop experience by the crew of the Defiant at Gaia IV was one example of how conscientious the Deep Space 9 crew were towards the timestream. (DTI novel: Watching the Clock)
During the Temporal Cold War front in 2409, temporal agents were dispatched to Gaia colony to ensure the colony fulfilled the destiny of erasing itself from the timeline. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "Lend Assistance to U.S.S. Defiant Descendants at Gaia Colony", duty officer assignment)
Around the same time, Parell was a Klingon woman who served as assault squad officer in the Khitomer Alliance military forces. She vowed that the Sons of Mogh would live on in her. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "Welcome to 2409", duty officer system)
The Gaia sector and its systems were targeted by the Hur'q during the Hur'q Conflict[4] in the year 2410. Following the restoration of the Hur'q civilization, rogue swarms remained a threat for the weakened Dominion, though as a newly inducted member into the Khitomer Alliance, it received military aid. (STO - Gamma Quadrant mission: "Home")
Alternate timelines[]
In another alternate timeline beset by the Q Continuum's temporal anomaly crisis, "Gaia Odo" was pulled into the late 24th century. Around the year 2380, different timelines were interwoven, and Odo joined Starfleet to help Q resolve the temporal anomaly crisis. (ST video game: Timelines September 2017 event: "Guilty As Charged")
