Gendarme is a French word referring to a member of the genarmerie, or police force.

In a Q-created alternate 2332, Captain Jean-Luc Picard visited the home of his mother and father who, unwilling to believe this stranger was their son, threatened to call the gendarmes on the stranger. (TNG comic: "The Gift")
