Gold (symbol Au) is a chemical element, a transition metal with atomic number 79 on the periodic table.

Characteristics and historyEdit

Gold has an atomic mass of 196.967. Gold was discovered by Humans in Earth's ancient history. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

Gold was a somewhat rare mineral on Earth. Most Human economies were based on this metal until the 20th century. The gold rush of 1848 caused a massive influx of people to San Francisco and northern California. (ST - New Worlds, New Civilizations short story: "At Times of Peril")
