The Great Barrier is an immense energy field surrounding the galactic core. It was created 500,000 years ago by the Q Continuum to imprison The One for its crimes. This 100,000 light-year-wide area of intense radiation (also called the Shapeley Center), is considered by astrophysicists where stars form. In 2269, the USS Enterprise passed through the Great Barrier's edges, where the crew encountered the satyr being Lucien, and later the planet Megas-Tu. (TAS episode: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu")
In 2287, Sybok (having been influenced by The One) commandeered the USS Enterprise-A and successfully took it through the Great Barrier in search of Sha Ka Ree. (TOS movie: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier)
