The Great Monetary Collapse was a devastating economic disaster that hit the Ferengi Alliance in the 2350s. The Ferengi economy suffered rampant inflation and its currency had to be devaluated to compensate.
At the time, Quark was serving on a Ferengi freighter which was hundreds of light years from Ferenginar, leaving him unable to save the money in his accounts. In its own way, the Collapse was as devastating to the Ferengi people as the bombing of the Antwerp Conference was to the United Federation of Planets. (DS9 episode: "Homefront")
