Hawkins was a communications officer aboard the USS Enterprise in the alternate reality created by Nero's disturbing of the timeline. In 2258, he relinquished his role to Nyota Uhura, after he claimed that he would not be able to distinguish Romulan from Vulcan. (TOS movie: Star Trek)
