Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure of congestive cardiac failure, was a medical condition which resulted from structural or functional disorder that impaired the ability of the heart to fill or pump a sufficient amount of blood throughout the humanoid body.

A type of plant known as melanth, which grew near the Fire Falls on Romulus, was capable of causing heart failure if it's deadly pollen was inhaled. (TOS novel: Epiphany)
