Heyne's TOS novel: Der Entropie Effekt.

Heyne Verlag is the German publishing wing of Random House.

History and specifics[]

For many years, Heyne Verlag was the designated licensee authorized to release German language translations of Pocket Books (Simon & Schuster) Star Trek novels, from the early days of the numbered TOS books of the 1980s all the way to the early 2000s, with various spinoffs and the novels set after the series, such as the Star Trek: Section 31 novels. During the era of the numbered Pocket novels, Heyne also issued books with numbers, but since the translations were made in a different order than the original editions, the numbering systems are not consistent.

All Heyne translations used the English name for the franchise "Star Trek", although at least one compilation used the subtitle "Raumschiffs Enterprise", possibly in an attempt to reference Raumschiff Enterprise, the German name for previous releases of the Star Trek franchise. When Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered, Heyne translations were branded Die Nächste Generation but eventually started using the English name and logo for the spinoff. Some TOS releases were branded Star Trek Classic after the TNG premiere in order to differentiate them. Books of the Starfleet Academy series were subtitled Starfleet Kadetten, but that subtitle was also used for the various DS9 young reader books, even though they did not depict Jake and Nog as Starfleet cadets ("Kadetten"). When Star Trek: New Frontier premiered, the German language subtitle Die Neue Grenze was used.

The license to translate Star Trek books from Pocket/Simon & Schuster was eventually transitioned to Cross Cult. There was some overlap, as Heyne had begun translating the New Frontier series (as Die Neue Grenze), and for completeness, Cross Cult issued their own editions of some of the Bernhard Kempen translations previously sold by Heyne. Cross Cult did not use the "Die Neue Grenze" subtitling, however, preferring to keep the Star Trek: New Frontier English logotype.

In February 2014, at the very end of the viability of their license for Star Trek material, Heyne Verlag issued or re-issued more than 200 of their German language Star Trek novels as eBooks. These included entire runs of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT novels.

Heyne's German translations were written by Uwe Anton, Andreas Brandhorst, Ronald M. Hahn, Bernhard Kempen, Michael Kubiak, Achim Lehmkuhl and Harald Pusch.
