A hover taxi was a type of hovercar-for-hire in operation on Earth in the 23rd century.

Hover taxis were controlled by computer who asked their occupants their intended destination and once the journey was completed informed them of the correct payment in credits. In the 2260s, the computers installed in hover taxi's that operated in New York City were programmed in the vernacular of the old-time taxi cab driver that used to ply the streets of Manhattan in the 20th and 21st centuries.

In late 2265, Captain James T. Kirk took a hover taxi from the Starfleet transporter facility in Battery Park to 320 East, 53rd Street to visit the home of Thomas and Dana Mitchell. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Enterprise)
