Hyronalin (also spelled hyronalyn, hyronaline, or hydronilen) was a drug used to treat radiation poisoning, used during the 23rd and 24th centuries. It had been a standard treatment for radiation poisoning since the late 2100s decade. (TOS episode: "The Deadly Years"; ST website : StarTrek.com)
History and specifics[]
Specifics[]
Hyronalin is an autonomic nervous system stimulant. It is easier to produce and acts more quickly, with better results, than adrenaline. Potential side effects include pulmonary edema, headache, anxiety, and palpitations. A 10 cc dose is standard; an overdose could be fatal. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)
Hyronalin can be derived from the exoskeleton of the Alverian dung beetle. (Decipher RPG module: Creatures)
A 23rd century Starfleet medical pouch contains 12 hypospray doses each of hyronalin, masiform-D and neural paralyzer. (FASA RPG modules: Trader Captains and Merchant Princes (2nd edition), Spacelanes: The Magazine of Interstellar Trade)
History[]
Hyronalin was initially developed through genetic engineering by Bio/Genetic Research Incorporated on Earth not long after the Eugenics Wars to treat high-level radiation exposure. (FASA RPG module: The Federation)
A hyronalin derivative was used by Federation sociological observers on planet NGC 667 due to the degree of naturally occurring radiation on that world. (TOS - Constellations short story: "First, Do No Harm")
In 2267, when hyronalin proved ineffective, Leonard McCoy resorted to using adrenaline to cure a landing party suffering from hyperaging triggered by radiation exposure. (TOS episode: "The Deadly Years")
In 2282, the USS Enterprise was damaged by rogue Mestikan vessels near the pulsar PSR 418-D/1015.3. Captain Spock used a photon torpedo to trigger a radiation burst from the pulsar that disabled the enemy ships. Prior to firing, he asked McCoy to prepare hyronalin doses in case they were needed. (TOS - Mere Anarchy eBook: The Darkness Drops Again)
In 2371, Julian Bashir treated Miles O'Brien with hyronalin after he was exposed to radiation from a plasma conduit. (DS9 episode: "Visionary")
In 2373, The Doctor treated Tom Paris with a mixture of hyronalin and lectrazine to inoculate against radiation exposure while he attempted to collect plasma from a subspace disruption aboard the shuttle Cochrane. (VOY episode: "Real Life")
In 2375, Beverly Crusher was unable to use hyronalin to treat Driana's radiation poisoning as she was allergic to it. (TNG - The Sky's the Limit short story: "Four Lights")
In 2376, the inhabitants of Europa Nova used hyronalin to treat those suffering from exposure to the theta radiation from the Malon tanker Apsac. They began to run out, although they changed to arithrazine as it better treated the unusual effects of theta radiation better than hyronalin. (DS9 - Gateways novel: Demons of Air and Darkness)
In July 2376, the entire crew of the USS Defiant required hyronalin treatments following radiation exposure from nanobots hidden in subspace. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: This Gray Spirit)
In October 2376, radiation pulses from a bomb on Trill injured many joined Trills. Symbionts were recovered and kept in hyronalin-saturated, nutrient-rich pools to help preserve their memories. (DS9 - Worlds of DS9 novel: Trill: Unjoined)
