India was a nation-state and region on planet Earth. Residents were called Indians. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

History[]

20th century[]

When Jack told T'Mir about the places he wanted to visit in 1958, he also mentioned India. (ENT episode: "Carbon Creek")

India underwent much strife through the 1960s-1980s, with the deaths of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, as well as the secret establishment and later destruction of the facility called Chrysalis and the explosion at Bhopal. (TOS novels: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 1, The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume 2)

It was noted that Khan Noonien Singh rose to power in India in the 1990s decade and cemented a power base that spanned from Asia to the Middle East. (TOS episode: "Space Seed")

Abhirati Indrani was among the thousands of people who helped drive the tyrant Khan from power by exercising passive resistance. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

21st century[]

In 2024, the Los Angeles Times published an article about an attack by Iran on an Indian munitions factory. (PIC episode: "Watcher") In the same year, India participated in the Europa Mission. (PIC episode: "Fly Me to the Moon")

In the mid-21st century, India, along with its traditional rival Pakistan, was a member of the Eastern Coalition. (TLE novel: The Sundered)

22nd century[]

In the early 22nd century, Kamal Chandra was a senior vice-president of the company that owned the majority of continental and extra-planetary shuttle facility contracts on the Indian subcontinent, Patna Air and Space. Indrani was his great-grandmother.

His son, Ravi Chandra was born in India. He grew up in Patna.

In 2153, Captain Jonathan Archer included Ensign Ravi Chandra in a landing party to planet Kaletoo. Chandra presumed this was because the captain thought Chandra's experience with the Indian Thar Desert was an advantage in the desolate climate on Kaletoo. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

23rd century[]

In the year 2266, Earth mathematician and pacifist Alfred Bleikoff, who had been cryogenically frozen in the 1990s, was revived and permitted to tour Earth anonymously, including India. (TOS comic: "Prophet of Peace")

Alternate timelines[]

In the Kelvin timeline, India formed the core of the Khanate, the Augment nation ruled by Khan Noonien Singh, in 1996. All other Augment nations except the Khanate were warlike. The Khanate was drawn into conflict when Khan's ally Bernard Maltuvis betrayed him and the Australia-based Maltuvisland attacked. Khan's forces emerged victorious. (TOS - Khan comic: "Issue 3")

In another alternate timeline, Augments ruled Earth from India. The vain and brutal empress kept tigers in her palace. In 2263, her forces captured Starfleet officers from different permutations of the Kelvin timeline. Recognizing his Vulcan strength, the empress allied with the vengeful Commander Simon Grayson, and together they murdered the other officers. (TOS - Boldly Go - IDIC comic: "Part 4")

The Indian subcontinent was also considered a landmass of its own. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

The Indian Ocean on its south, west and east was named for the nation. (Decipher RPG module: Worlds)

The capital city New Delhi was located in north-central India. (ST - The Lost Era novel: The Sundered)

Patna was the capital city of Bihar, a state in northeastern India, congruent with the Gangetic Plains. The climate there was lush and fertile.

India's Thar Desert was dry, desolate land, comparable to the environment on planet Kateloo in the Delphic Expanse. Dunes could be found just west of the Aravalli hills.

Fauna and flora[]

Elephants were native to South Asia. (TOS novel: The Rift)

Culture[]

Humans from India often had black hair and dark skin. In the Kelvin timeline, Section 31 had Khan Noonien Singh's skin lightened and his face surgically altered to disguise his identity. (TOS - Khan comic: "Issue 3")

Religions in India included Sikhism and Hinduism. Their followers were called Sikh and Hindu, respectively. (TOS episode: "Space Seed", ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

Dussehra was the Hindu holiday celebrating the victory of Rama over Ravana, the evil Asura king. It was an annual festival. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure)

By the 24th century, the Federation's Star Station India had been named in honor of this nation-state. (TNG episode: "Unnatural Selection") Starships named for Indian cities included the USS Bombay and the USS New Delhi. (VAN novel: Harbinger, ST video game: Armada II)

Jasminder Choudhury was of South Asian descent. She and her family had Indian names. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace)
