Istanbul was a city on Earth located in the former nation-state of Turkey. Istanbul is an ancient city, which was previously known by a number of names, including Byzantium and Constantinople when it served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire.

The Hagia Sophia is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the city. (DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Cathedral)

During the 14th century, the city was one of many affected by the Bubonic plague. The immortal being Flint was in the city when the plague came to the area. (TOS episode: "Requiem for Methuselah")

In the 19th century, the city still bore the name of Constantinople, but the name had been changed to Istanbul by the early 20th century. During the 20th century, the Orient Express train route ran from Istanbul to Paris, France. (TNG episode: "Emergence")

In one of the Julian Bashir, Secret Agent holosuite stories, Istanbul sends several messages to the South Pacific. (DS9 episode: "Change of Heart")

At least one starship was named for the city, the USS Constantinople, an Istanbul-class cruiser. (TNG episode: "The Schizoid Man"; Decipher RPG module: Starfleet Operations Manual)
