Early in his Starfleet career, he served aboard the USS Tamerlane as a gunner's mate. (VAN novel: Storming Heaven)

In 2265, Chief petty officer Vumelko was assigned to starbase Vanguard as a customs officer. (VAN novel: Harbinger)

Just prior to the Tholian attack on the station in late-2268, Chief Vumelko was trying to keep order in the docking bay during the mass evacuation of Vanguard. Although he was a noncombatant and therefore was supposed to leave the station himself aboard the transport Kenitra, he decided to stay aboard Vanguard and use his experience as a gunner's mate to fight the Tholians. It is unknown if Vumelko made it off Vanguard before the station was destroyed.
