The J-class was a type of starship which was originally operated as a freighter by Earth-bond companies in the 22nd century. The class was later adopted by Federation Starfleet for use in cadet training in the 23rd century.
[edit] History
In the early 22nd century, the Earth Cargo Service was largely dependent on J-class freighters, but they were later superceded by the larger and faster Y class. (ENT episode: "Horizon")
Although most J-class were decommissioned and scrapped by the 23rd century, some still remained in service into the 2260s. In 2266, Harcourt Fenton Mudd possessed a J-class freighter, until it was destroyed in an asteroid belt after being pursued by the USS Enterprise. (TOS episode: "Mudd's Women")
Starfleet also used J-class vessels for Starfleet Academy training missions in the 2260s, despite the fact that officers such as Commodore José Mendez felt Starfleet should decommission the old ships. Mendez became even more worried in late 2266 when he learned that his close friend Fleet Captain Christopher Pike was accompanying a group of cadets out on a training mission. The vessel suffered a ruptured baffle plate, which flooded parts of the ship with delta radiation. Pike went in to save those still in those sections of the ship, and carried out several people, but he became severely crippled by radiation. (TOS episode: "The Menagerie", Part I; TOS novel: Burning Dreams)
Although most J-class vessels had been decommissioned by the 2260s, Starfleet Command began mass recommissioning of inactive vessels in 2267 as part of the effort to make Starfleet ready for the upcoming conflict with the Klingon Empire. (TOS novel: Demands of Honor)
