Jal was a name that was earned by a young male Kazon, which signified their ascension to adulthood.

The name was earned by the young warrior either killing an enemy in battle, or being killed in battle himself. However, being captured in battle would prevent the warrior from ever being granted an adult name. (VOY episode: "Initiations")
