James was the name of a 23rd century Human individual who was the first lover of Winona Kirk.

Looking back on the origins of his name, Winona's son James T. Kirk remembered that the name "James" was given to him based in part on his mother's fond memories of the James who had given Winona her first instruction in lovemaking. (TOS novelization: Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

Although the TMP novelization did not mention it, the TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek mentioned that the name James was also inspired because it was the name of Winona's father.
