James Wainwright was a male Human who lived in the 20th century.

As a child, he was an avid reader of the numerous science fiction stories featuring Captain Proton, Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers and the novel The War of the Worlds. (TOS - Strange New Worlds III short story: "The Aliens Are Coming!")

In July 1947, Captain Wainwright, then a member of the United States Army Air Corps, supervised the recovery of the Ferengi shuttle Quark's Treasure and had Quark, Rom and Nog incarcerated. Wainwright was suspicious of the Ferengi and believed they were at the forefront of an invasion on Earth. Wainwright planned to force them by extreme means to reveal their plans, but was stopped by Jeffrey Carlson and Faith Garland. After the Ferengi escaped, Wainwright was told by General Rex Denning that their official story would be that all they ever found was a crashed weather balloon. (DS9 episode: "Little Green Men")

On July 10, 1969, Wainwright, now working for a government agency known as Project Sign, met with John Christopher after the United States Air Force Captain encountered an unidentified flying object, the USS Enterprise. (TOS short story: "The Aliens Are Coming!", TOS eBook: The Aliens Are Coming!)
