John Muir (April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914) was one of Earth's first modern preservationists. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, and wildlife, especially in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, were read by millions and are still popular today. His direct activism helped to create Yosemite National Park and other wilderness areas. His writings and philosophy strongly influenced the formation of the environmental movement.
In the late 23rd century, a Starfleet vessel (of an unknown class) was named for Muir. The John Muir, which bore the registry NCC-1732 and was commanded by Captain S.C. Jaffe, was undergoing a refit at Starbase 24 during the discussion of Operation Retrieve. (TOS movie: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)
- John Muir was quoted in the opening of TOS novel: The Rift. The ship that bears his name was not shown onscreen, but was depicted in a computer readout. The ship's captain was named for the film's second unit director, Steven-Charles Jaffe.
