Major Joss Hayes was leader of the MACO (Military Assault Command Operations) squad that was assigned to the Enterprise from 2153 to 2154.
Hayes came from a military family that dated its military service all of the way back to Earth's second world war. His father prepared him all of his life for a military career.
A family man himself and veteran of the Janus Pirate Wars, Hayes lead the MACO unit assigned to assist the Enterprise in dealing with the Xindi threat following the attack of 2153. Hayes was a graduate of West Point. (ENT episode: "Hatchery")
One of his missions during the Xindi conflict was accompanying Captain Jonathan Archer to the planet Kaletoo, following up on a lead on the Xindi.
Hayes was killed near the end of the Xindi mission on an operation to rescue Ensign Hoshi Sato from a Xindi Reptilian vessel. (ENT novel: Last Full Measure; ENT episode: "Countdown")
