The Class J planet Jupiter (Sol V) is the fifth planet of the Sol system, and is one of four gas giants in the system. Jupiter is surrounded by 63 moons, however most of them are the size of asteroids.

Specifics[]

Jupiter's atmosphere was rich in helium and hydrogen. Its gaseous regions stretched 1,000 kilometers high and featured diverse gas belts including such materials as ammonia crystals, methane, sulfur, and ammonium hydrosulfide. Below the gaseous regions, gravity crushed these materials into liquids. Below 30,000 kilometers, its core was made up of solid, metallic liquid hydrogen. Orbiting Sol at an average distance of 5.2 AUs, its electromagnetic field was 19,000 times stronger than Earth's and its Van Allen belt was 10,000 times stronger than Earth's. (Last Unicorn RPG - Starfleet Academy module: A Cadet's Guide to Sector 001 Earth)

Jupiter's size and composition led some to theorize that it was a failed star. (TOS comic: "Captain's Log: Pike", ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)

Jupiter was also the location of a giant hurricane known as the Red Spot, which Christine Vale referenced upon seeing the giant hurricane on Droplet. (TTN novel: Over a Torrent Sea)

Its immense gravitational field prevented a planet from forming between it and Mars, instead resulting in the Sol asteroid belt. (TNG - SA novel: The Haunted Starship)

History[]

Galileo Galilei was the first Human to see Jupiter through a telescope. (TOS novelization: The Motion Picture, ST reference: Worlds)

The first Earth probe to visit Jupiter was the Pioneer 10 in 1973, and that was soon followed by the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probe in 1979, as these probes moved into the outer Sol system. In 1982, Project Galileo was the first probe to descend into Jupiter's atmosphere, and sent back the first reports on the atmosphere to Earth. By the mid-2000s, humans were moving out into the system and conducting the first manned mission.

In the 2020s, the exploration of Jupiter's atmosphere continued when three atmospheric probes were sent into the Red Spot. The information was sent back to Dr. Lloyd Elkins on Earth, and he summarised that the Spot was the result of Jupiter's inner core and not simply an atmospheric disturbance. (TOS reference: Spaceflight Chronology)

In 2063, it was Jupiter which was to play a part in first contact between humans and Vulcans. The Vulcan starship T'Plana-Hath was dispatched to chart potential wormhole eddies that could be created by Jupiter's interaction with Sol. While conducting the survey, the T'Plana-Hath detected Zefram Cochrane's warp-ship, the Phoenix, traveling away from Earth at warp, and changed course to investigate. (TOS novel: Preserver)

As humanity moved out into space over the next century, Jupiter's moons became home to human colonies, and Jupiter soon became the location of Jupiter Station, a Federation scientific facility which designed and experimented with the latest technologies. In the 24th century, Jupiter Station was home to Lewis Zimmerman who developed his Emergency Medical Hologram at the base. (VOY episodes: "Projections", "Life Line"; DS9 episode: "Doctor Bashir, I Presume")

In 2254 and 2266, a group of rogue Halogians, seeking revenge for their world being denied membership into the United Federation of Planets, attempted to ignite stellar fusion within Jupiter to destroy Sector 001. (TOS comic: "Captain's Log: Pike")

In 2273 and 2275, the USS Enterprise passed by Jupiter. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Motion Picture, TOS novel: Spock's World)

In the 24th century, Patricia Cosalia designed an electrostatic tether placed in planetary orbit to power Jupiter Station. (Adventures RPG module: Strange New Worlds: Mission Compendium Vol. 2)

In fiction[]

In the literature of the 20th century science fiction series The Adventures of Captain Proton, Jupiter's atmosphere was home to a race of balloon-whales. (VOY - Captain Proton: Defender of the Earth short story: "The Planets of the Future")

In the year 2000, Captain Proton raced toward Earth for an emergency summons. To decelerate his rocket ship once within the solar system, Proton fired the ship's Atom Attractor at Jupiter, a maneuver that had never been tried before and shortened their trip by five hours and 16 minutes. (VOY - The Adventures of Captain Proton short story: "Death of the Patrol")
