Kaferia (also known as Tau Ceti III) is a planet, the third planet in the Tau Ceti system, in Sector 004 of the galaxy's Alpha Quadrant.

Specifics[]

It is home to the Kaferian insectoid civilization, who named their world Kohath-Seredi. (ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)

The world's climate supported vast rain forests. (FASA RPG module: The Federation) It was well known for its agricultural exports. (ST reference: Star Trek Maps)

FASA denoted it as the fifth planet in the system and offered conflicting population figures: 4.45 billion in a chart, but less than 500,000 in the world's description. Star Trek Maps gave its population as 7.2 billion.

Its western hemisphere had two continents. One of them had small settlements, some outlying homes, and thick forests. The planet propagated through space at 32 kilometers per second. (DTI novel: Watching the Clock)

The world had floating sea-hornet mounds. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Live by the Code)

It was included in a star chart denoting the original boundaries of the Federation, shown in the general vicinity of Sol, Fomalhaut, and Vulcan. (FASA RPG module: Trader Captains and Merchant Princes)

History[]

Sector 004

Kaferia's location in Sector 004.

22nd century[]

Humans had known of Kaferia prior to the year 2151. One of its more notable exports is the Kaferian apple, which would be considered a delicacy across the Alpha Quadrant in the 23rd century. (TOS episode & Star Trek 8 novelization: Where No Man Has Gone Before; ENT episode: "Strange New World"; TOS - Strange New Worlds 9 short story: "Gone Native"; ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)

In June 2156, in the aftermath of the Romulan invasion of neighboring Tau Ceti IV during the Earth-Romulan War, Kaferia aided Travis Mayweather and other survivors of the destroyed starship Atlantis. After the survivors were evacuated, Romulans retaliated by invading Kaferia. Kaferians hibernated underground for four years until the occupation ended. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Tower of Babel)

By the 2160s decade, Kaferia was on Vulcan trade routes. (ST reference: Star Charts)

On 12 May 2164, Mayweather returned to Kaferia aboard the USS Pioneer in hopes of convincing Kaferians to join the Federation. They refused to formally ally at the time, but were willing to trade. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: Tower of Babel)

23rd century[]

In 2273, for diplomatic purposes the starship USS Enterprise's briefing room was redecorated with features of a Kaferian villa, incorporating nightplum bushes and murals illustrating mountains. (TOS novel: Enemy Unseen)

By the 2270s, Starfleet Intelligence operative Commodore Conrad Reppert had retired to Kaferia after suffering debilitating exposure to a Klingon mind sifter during the Federation-Klingon War of 2267. In 2279, the Enterprise orbited Kaferia while Captain Spock and Nyota Uhura visited him at his residence. (TOS novel: Living Memory)

In the 2270s or 2280s, the Cassiopeia 1 R1 Investigator-class astrophysics research space laboratory was operational in orbit of Kaferia. (FASA RPG module: Regula-1 Orbital Station Deckplans)

By the 2280s, Kaferia had become an associate member of the Federation with a technological/sociopolitical index of 988767-77 and a planetary trade profile of ABCCCBB/A(C). (FASA RPG module: The Federation)

24th century[]

In the 2340s or 2350s, Doctor Beverly Crusher was stationed on Tau Ceti III. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace)

In the mid-24th century, Jean-Luc Picard and Walker Keel first met in an exotic bar located on the planet. (TNG episode: "Conspiracy")

In the 2360s, a transdimensional chroniton vortex opened near part of the planet's surface, expelling seven residents and tons of debris into space. During DTI agent Gariff Lucsly's first mission with Marion Dulmur as his partner, they visited Kaferia to prevent the incident, which was triggered by Paul Manheim's temporal experiments. They saved the casualties via time travel, installing a prototype chroniton field into the world's plantary defense system prior to the occurrence. (DTI novel: Watching the Clock)

In 2370, during his shore leave from the USS Enterprise-D, Ten Forward server Bartlett traveled to Tau Ceti III aboard a transport to visit his parents. (TNG novel: Rogue Saucer)

By 2378, Tau Ceti III had become a Federation member world. (ST reference: Star Charts)

In 2386, Doctor Geoffrey Mandel included Kaferia in his Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385 star chart. (ST reference: Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library)
