Captain Keene was the commanding officer of the Earth freighter, ECS Fortunate, in the 2150s.

In 2151, the Nausicaans attacked the Fortunate, and Keene was injured in the process. While Keene was recuperating, First Officer Matthew Ryan assumed command and attempted a retaliatory strike against the Nausicaan base. Fortunately, the Enterprise (NX-01) intervened to save the Fortunate. Once Keene had sufficiently recovered he domoted Ryan. (ENT episode: "Fortunate Son").
