Koch's postulates was a group of four criteria which were designed to establish a causal relationship between a microbe and a disease.

While studying an artificial disease that had infected a landing party on Miri's homeworld in 2266, Dr. Leonard McCoy determined that it didn't satisfy any of Koch's postulates. (TOS novelization: Miri)
