The Kolinahru were an ancient group that were known to be one of the most powerful, as well as cruel, factions that existed on ancient Vulcan. Their mind lords were known to be capable of killing an enemy by making their blood literally boil in their veins through pyrokinesis. The legends of their wanton acts of individual or mass mind control have spawned legends that still haunt Vulcan today. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of Kolinahr: The Vulcans) They were known to reside in the region of Gol on their Vulcan home planet. (TOS novel: Recovery)

This changed when the High Master of the Kolinahru, Sanshiin as he was later known, converted to Cthia after hearing the words of Surak personally. This occured during the Time of Awakening and they retreated from the wars in order to devote their lives to peace. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of Kolinahr: The Vulcans) Following Surak, the once feared adepts who had ruled through terror and manipulation had turned their control inwards. This saw them mastering their own mind and emotions rather than others, with these adepts revered by the Vulcan people. (TOS novel: Recovery)

It was the Kolinahru who developed the Kolinahr discipline and made their home in the Kolinahru Monastery in the Gol province. (Last Unicorn RPG module: The Way of Kolinahr: The Vulcans) In future eras, the Kolinahru followed the hallowed tradition where an anniversary was held over the death of a High Master which was observed by all adepts. This was a sign of respect and honor for the dead High Master who had trained them. (TOS novel: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier) They also welcomed any visitors to their home who were seeking a quiet retreat. (TOS novel: Recovery)
