- "...and let them stand shoulder to shoulder on the field of battle. Together they shall stand, and will stand together or fall together, for this is the way." - Romulan saying associated with latta.
Latta, also known as the Departing, was a ritual conducted in Romulan society.
Derived from the Romulan word for "death", Latta was a time for quiet reflection within Romulan society as it had more finality in it then many other cultures. This was because the Romulans did not believe in a life after death and thus there was no afterlife where one could join the Great Brothers who were believed to be still alive somewhere in the galaxy.
Those that died with honor, typically through battle, were given the term "d'latta". As such, this was normally associated with the military of the Romulan Star Empire but this was not always the case as those that contributed to the Romulan goal by their death received d'latta. - This would somewhat contradict the concept of Erebus that the Romulans believed, however, its possible that not all Romulans believed in the Great Brothers but those that do performed the Latta.
