Legate is a rank title given to either a politician's deputy who has command of a military or service organization, or used for a high-level diplomatic functionary. The term is an Anglicized version of a Roman term from the Latin language referring to one who had control of a legion of troops.

In the Cardassian Guard agency of the Cardassian Central Command, legate is a 24th century Cardassian officer rank title which is approximately equivalent to an admiral of comparable military or naval service organizations, such as Starfleet.
