Leonard Nimoy (1931–2015) was an actor who was most famous for portraying Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series and its spin-off movies. Nimoy also reprised his role in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes: "Unification, Part I" and "Unification, Part II", and in 2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness. Archive footage of Nimoy from "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "Mirror, Mirror" was used in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations".
Nimoy died February 27, 2015 at the age of 83. His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nimoy was diagnosed with the disease a year earlier and attributed it to his smoking habit, which he gave up on 30 years prior but suffered from the lingering affects. Nimoy was hospitalized a week before his death and while the news of his admission made headlines, but no other information was released during his stay. Nimoy did continue to send "tweets" and other social media interaction during that time but did not present any news.
