Lieutenant is a commissioned officer rank in many military organizations, naval services and space forces, most notably the Federation Starfleet.

StandingEdit

A lieutenant is a low-level line officer rank, in naval organizations a grade higher than a lieutenant junior grade and a grade below lieutenant commander in most rank structures, although some organizations may differ or omit certain ranks. The lieutenant rank is roughly equivalent with the authority of a infanty captain of military forces. The lieutenant grades of such military units are generally divided up as second lieutenant and first lieutenant

A lieutenant in Starfleet may be assigned as a department head or senior staff member of a mid-to-large size command such as a capital ship or space station. Some examples include Communications Officer Nyota Uhura of the USS Enterprise, Security Chief Worf of the USS Enterprise-D, Tactical Officer Tuvok of the USS Voyager or Chief Science Officer Jadzia Dax of Starbase Deep Space 9. A lieutenant could also serve as the first officer of a smaller starship or the second officer of a mid-size vessel. First Officer Ezri Dax of the USS Defiant and Second Officer Tuvok of Voyager filled these roles, respectively. (DS9, VOY)
