Lieutenant Kije was the title of a 20th century Russian satire, later adapted to a movie, and most notably, as a classical music suite by composer Sergei Prokofiev. The story of the original novella involves the creation of a fictional person, due to a grammatical error in an official report. Kije is believed to be a real person, though he is never actually seen by anyone, and he undergoes many turns of fortune before being "killed" in battle and honored posthumously.

Provofiev's "Lieutenant Kije" suite was a favorite piece of music of Tatya Bilash. She also referred to the Vulcan Sorahl as "Lieutenant Kije" as he left Earth, given that Earth history would never officially record his actual existence. (TOS novel: Strangers from the Sky)
